Second pair of eyes

Does this scenario sound familiar? You’re excited to give your presentation after working on it diligently for weeks. Your slides are perfect and you know your content inside out. The audience settles in and you begin. Advancing your slides, a spelling mistake in large text now jumps out at you – and your heart sinks. You know some of your audience spotted it too.

What about this one? The important report you’ve been tasked with writing up for business stakeholders is finally done. You’ve checked it, double-checked it – it’s good to go. The report feels great in your hands as it comes back from printing. As you proudly leaf through the finished product, you begin to spot the problems. US English spelling instead of the required Australian English. Auto-correct has changed PDS to PDF. You panic as you realise how many changes you need to make and then get the reports reprinted.

We’ve all experienced the frustration of failing to spot problems in our own content. A “second pair of eyes” is so important to help find these problems. A professional with critical distance from the creation of the content is highly beneficial if you care about your reputation and the credibility of the content you share.

Why choose us?

Lee’s attention to detail is legendary and is one of the reasons he’s such a sought-after software testing professional.

He has put these skills to use outside of the software testing field too, building significant experience as a proofreader. Lee has published two books and regularly writes blogs & articles. This unique combination of attention to detail, proofreading skills and writing experience makes Lee highly effective in providing a “second pair of eyes” to improve your content.

Just as software testing cannot be completely automated, our service offers value that automated solutions like Grammarly can’t. We will avoid the simple mistakes that fool automated paragraph checkers and will provide valuable suggestions that such tools can’t (see what’s included in our service below). We understand the context in which your content will be read and so can make suggestions related to that specific context, rather than just offering generic advice that may or may not be helpful.

Our service

While our service includes proofreading of your content, it also offers more than just proofreading.

Our service includes the following:

  • Correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalisation errors
  • Reworking sentences to improve their flow
  • Adapting vocabulary to ensure the tone is consistent with the document’s type and purpose
  • Removing repetition and editing in the interests of brevity
  • Identifying inconsistencies and providing suggestions for improvement
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the clarity of your content
  • Checking that citations and references are clear and correct (may incur additional cost for large sets of references)
  • Checking adherence to your style guide (if applicable and may incur additional cost)

Pricing

We can provide a second pair of eyes service for most forms of content, e.g. Word documents, PDFs, PowerPoint slides and web page content (and other text content in software).

Our fees are based on the word count of your document and when you want the job to be completed. We generally charge the same rate for all document types, though certain types of content may incur additional cost (e.g. documents with many diagrams or formulas, or large lists of references).

Some examples of pricing for standard documents are shown below, but we will always quote based on your actual document and delivery timeframe so you are clear on the cost before we start work.

In addition to “one-off” content reviews, Dr Lee Consulting also takes on longer-term retained clients for our second pair of eyes service at preferential rates.
